Abstract
A micro-scale backward wave oscillator uses demonstrated high current density edge emitter cold cathodes to produce a sheet beam over a micromachined slow wave structure. Continuous tuning or locking are accomplished by controlling the beam voltage. A beam energy homogenizing structure increases efficiency compared with thermionic BWOs and reduces the need for magnetic confinement of the beam. This and the elimination of heaters reduce the size of the source to well under 1/10 that of conventional BWOs. Several sources can be combined to cover the entire 0.1 - 1.0 THz range.
