Abstract
THERE HAS BEEN FOR SOME YEARS A NATIONAL NEED FOR A RELIABLEAND INEXPENSIVE COMMERCIAL PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF A HIGH CURRENT DENSITY SUPERCONDUCTOR THAT WILL OPERATE IN FIELDS OF 18T AND ABOVE. RECENTLY THERE HAVE BEEN INDICATIONS, BOTH IN THE U.S. AND JAPANESE LITERATURE, THAT A POWDER METALLURGICAL (P/M) METHOD CAN PROVIDE SUCH A PROCESS. THIS PROPOSED WORK IS TO EXPLORE THE COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL OF THE P/M METHOD FOR THE PRODUCTION OF NB3SN. THERE IS EVIDENCE THAT THE PROCESS CAN BE APPLIED TO A WIDE RANGE OF DIFFERENT MATERIALS BUT NB3SN HAS BEEN CHOSEN BECAUSE ITS PROPERTIES, AS PRODUCED BY A NUMBER OF DIFFERENTPROCESSES, ARE WELL KNOWN AND A COMPARISON OF THESE WITH THOSE OF THE P/M PRODUCED MATERIAL WILL PROVIDE US WITH A GOOD WAY TO ASSESS THE PROCESS ITSELF. ALSO THE SMALL P/M WORK AT MIT USING LABORATORY FABRICATION TECHNIQUES, HAS SHOWN CONSIDERABLE PROMISE AND FEWER PROBLEMS WHEN IT IS APPLIED TO NB3SN RATHER THAN TO OTHER SUPERCONDUCTING MATERIALS. IT HAS BEEN SHOWN, ON THIS LABORATORY SCALE, THAT BY USING HIGH PERCENTAGES OF NBTI IN THE SN CORES, AND RELATIVELY LARGE POWDER SIZES IT IS POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN HIGH OVERALL JC'S AT FIELDS OF 18T AND ABOVE. IN THIS WORK, WE WILL APPLY COMMERCIAL TYPE PROCESSING TO SCALE UP THE P/M METHOD AND ASSESS THE TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC POTENTIAL RELATIVE TO THE ALTERNATIVE METHODS OF PRODUCING NB SN.
