Abstract
Surface Treatment Technologies (ST2) has developed a high strength, weldable, corrosion resistant aluminum alloy. In addition, ST2 has developed a patent pending approach for fabricating thermally stable high strength alloys with ultra-fine grain structures. This approach allows the material to be heat treated after friction stir processing without abnormal grain growth. The ultra-fine grain structure inproves mechanical properties,corrosion resistance and formability. In the proposed program ST2 will work with the University of South Carolina to develop the friction stir processing appraoch. In addition we will also work with QuesTek to model abnormal grain growth for this process.
