AbstractSynectics Corporation is teaming with Motorola, the world's largest developer of wireless communications and information handling systems, to address systems and technical approaches for high reliability, all weather, multilevel security, EMI and jam-resistant, and a node-to-node bandwidth exceeding 1 Mbps, capable of connecting more than 100 nodes. A disciplined approach has been selected for achieving the program objectives, ensuring there is a consensus of opinion between the small business and the USMC before significant program funds are expended. An initial review has been conducted and the most promising commercial technology that has been identified is the application of Motorola's ALTAIR Wireless Inbuilding Network technology to outdoor mobile applications. The Wireless LAN is an Internal Research and Development (IRAD), multiyear effort directed toward adapting Motorola's commercial wireless technology to mobile military applications. The IRAD is concentrating on three specific types of problems, one of which is providing mobile wireless LANs. In all areas of our investigation, we are emphasizing seamless integration of wired and wireless components. Users working with either wired or wireless assets should be able to access other wireless users without regard to whether the physical connections used are wireless.
