AbstractSYSTRAN, and our partner Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corp. (BATC) - an experienced HLA user and member of the HLA Protofederation activity - will design and selectively demonstrate (in Phase I), and develop and significantly demonstrate (in Phase II) a series of techniques and processes that will allow users of idstributed simulations the ability to incorporate audio signatures, audio transmissions, and the reception of these transmissions within their Federates. The techniques will apply to audio whether generated from weapons or people. Weapon audio outputs include the audio from engines, movement, and activity within a modeled environment (i.e., one including terrain and weather), plus the actual audio due to the detonations of the munitions. The audio output of people-in-the-loop will be actual speech, while models of people within constructive simulations will output text that must be converted to speech at the receiving site. The models and techniques we propose will be compatible with all HLA and RTI rules; they will utilize the existing techniques developed for Data Distribution Management using multidimensional routing spaces. The generation of sound at the receiving end will be compatible with COTS PC hardware and sophisticated digital signal processing systems for immersive 3-dimension sound presentation.
