AbstractThe N97-053 topic description states that the objective of this solicitation is to develop a distributed integrated data and information access system. It states that the environment can be heterogeneous with respect to platforms, operating systems, and applications, and the information access must occur in a manner that is independent of these. Systran Corporation and KBE (Knowledge Base Engineering) Inc. are already developing software which can accomplish what the US Navy requires. Systran is developing ORB_IT (an object-oriented software) on an Air Force funded Phase II SBIR project (Contract # F33615-96-C-5112) which is intended for "intelligent", "seamless" and "transparent" data processing on a "truly heterogeneous computer network". KBE has developed IKE software on Air Force funded projects which has the capability to rapidly develop project and process oriented multimedia applications that can retrieve data from "heterogeneous" databases, and present the data in a consolidated manner using advanced graphical user interfaces (GUIs). ORB_IT and IKE have to be integrated to provide the capability the US Navy is seeking through this SBIR proposal. That is what is being proposed by Systran and KBE. The product that will be developed will be known as "IKE on ORB_IT".
