Abstract
65076 If the interconnection mechanism between supercomputers fails, or does not meet the high bandwidth and low latency requirements of such distributed systems, the value of using the supercomputers degrades. This project will design, develop, and demonstrate two devices for the routing and switching of data using entirely optical media. Embedded fault detection and recovery software will be used to reconfigure hardware elements in order to preserve data movement when various faults occur. The optical media provides high bandwidth. Phase I will extend and complete the requirements, refine the design for the optical routing and switching system elements, and formulate detailed plans for Phase II prototyping and demonstration. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The devices should support high-bandwidth, low-latency, high-reliability data communication in multiple commercial applications such as distributed computing, server arrays, storage area networks, and telecommunications. Additional applications areas include advanced avionics systems in both commercial and military aircraft.
