Abstract

The proposed research effort focuses on developing a hot-press/HIP fabrication approach for transparent spinel armor plates up to 15 inches square and 0.5 inches thick. A processing protocol will be established that results in transmission in the visiblerange of >80% with a low scatter. Additionally the microstructure will be developed through understanding and controlling the processing variables to result in spinel plates with optimal ballistic performance. The Phase II research focuses on scaling theprocess from 4
