Abstract
Robotics technology now provides precise position control of objects over large displacements in multiple axes. Laser devices have evolved that can produce accurate position data in three coordinates using a single laser source. Correction algorithms for near-field measurements have been developed to compensate for probe position errors. Many new materials are available to reduce structural weight and RF reflectivity. High speed workstations can acquire and process tremendous amounts of data in real-time. TSC proposes to leverage these advancements in the design of a semi-portable antenna near-field scanner. This "Robo-Scanner" will be capable of making rapid RF performance measurements and diagnostic evaluations of radar and communications antennas in the field and in maintenance depots. It will automatically locate the antenna aperture and accurately scan its probe antenna over a pre-determined surface of arbitrary geometry. The Robo-Scanner will provide a measurement and diagnostic capability in the field which now exists only in engineering laboratories and factories. Its availability will simplify maintenance of radar and communication systems and insure that these systems are operating at full performance. It will save the cost of dismantling the antenna and returning it to the factory for measurement and repair.
