Abstract
A PHASE I SBIR PROJECT TO INVESTIGATE THE FEASIBILITY OF DEVELOPING THE EQUIPMENT NECESSARY TO PROVIDE ENHANCED 911 EMERGENCY SERVICE TO RURAL COMMUNITIES. THE PROPOSED PROJECT CONTAINS TWO AREAS: (1) TO MODIFY THE EXISTING PATENTED STATUS RECOGNITIONED UNIT (SRU) TO PERFORM THE TANDEM FUNCTION ON A LOCAL BASIS FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES; AND (2) TO DESIGN AND DEVELOP AN AUTOMATED LOCATION IDENTIFICATION (ALI) MODULE NECESSARY TO IDENTIFY RURAL SUBSCRIBERS ON MULTI-PARTY LINES OR IN LOCATIONS WHERE EXISTING SWITCHES DO NOT GENERATE SUCH INFORMATION. IF THIS PROJECT SUCCESSFULLY CARRIES THROUGH PHASE II, A COST EFFECTIVE E911 LOCAL TANDEM WILL BE DEVELOPED, MANUFACTURED AND MARKETED THROUGHOUT THE RURAL COMMUNITIES OF THE UNITED STATES, SIGNIFICANTLY BENEFITTING: RESIDENTS OF RURAL COMMUNITIES, RURAL TELEPHONE COMPANIES, PUBLIC EMERGENCY RESPONDENTS IN RURAL AREAS.
