Research Institution
The FRA has identified cab car end door kick panels as possible emergency egress panels. They could be used in circumstances where the convential emergency exits are unusable. The industry has operational and maintenance concerns. The objectives of this SBIR are to define the requirements for end door emergency egress panels and identify alternative design approaches and assess their effectiveness in meeting the requirements. TIAX will review existing regulations and interview operators to help identify the requirements. Concepts will be identified for quick-release mechanisms that can be used in this application, including the mechanism currently used for emergency egress windows. The concepts will be evaluated to determine their effectiveness in meeting the requirements. A final report will be written describing the requirements, the concepts, and the results of the evaluation.
