Abstract
The aerospace industry needs an innovative pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) to increase the performance of new aircraft paint-replacement coatings for both rotorcraft and fixed-winged platforms. The PSA will be used to adhere existing polymeric appliqué film materials to the current polyurethane-based aircraft body primers. Currently, existing PSAs cannot provide mechanical performance and solvent resistance in a broad temperature range while maintaining cost-effective processability and simple removal. The cyanate ester PSA offers many benefits over existing PSA systems, such as higher thermal stability and enhanced solvent resistance. The high tensile strength and modulus prevent weakening or fracture under stress and ensure adhesive failure upon removal without leaving residue. Once developed, the one-time use appliqué will be repositionable upon application and removable with minimal heat or tools involved. This PSA will use roll-to-roll web processing. This state-of-the-art PSA will transform the world of coatings for aircraft, broadening application areas, facilitating processing, and yielding higher quality mass production.
