Abstract

The High Level Architecture (HLA) for Modeling and Simulation is evolving into the DoD standard paradigm for developing distribution simulation environments through the integration of disparate simulations ("federates"). HLA also has significant potential to provide similar benefits to the commercial software industry in general, and the online distributed entertainment industry in particular. HLA's ready support for integrating federates with widely-varying scopes will facilitate the rapid and effective production of distributed virtual worlds offering users a wide variety of entertainment options. The development of an HLA-Enhanced Distributed Gaming Environment (HEDGE) will provide users with ready access to many different popular game genres, and will also constitute an important resource to existing game developers desiring to link their products together into a single integrated gaming environment.
