Abstract
AN OPERATIONAL AIRBORNE AIR TURBULENCE ADVANCE WARNING SYSTEM IS BEING DEVELOPED. THE BASIC INSTRUMENT STEMS FROM NASA SPONSORED AIRBORNE CLEAR AIR TURBULENCE (CAT) AND LOW LEVEL WIND SHEAR (LLWS) RESEARCH CONDUCTED OVER THE PAST TEN YEARS. THE SYSTEM PROPOSED IS A LIGHT WEIGHT, LOW POWER, PASSIVE, SCANNING, INFRARED OPTICAL INSTRUMENT WITH A STATE OF THE ART MICROPROCESSOR. THE FIRST PRE-PRODUCTION SYSTEM WILL BE MANUFACTURED AND INSTALLED IN AN AIRCRAFT FOR INITIAL IN-SERVICE TESTING.
