Abstract
MILITARY OPTICAL SYSTEMS NEED HARD, CORROSION-RESISTANT COATINGS. DIAMONDLIKE CARBON HAS MANY DESIRABLE PROPERTIES FOR THIS PURPOSE: HARD, RESISTENT TO ETCH, ROUGHNESS FILLING, AND TRANSPARENT IN THE VISIBLE TO INFRARED. WE ARE PREPARING TO COAT COMMON INFRARED DETECTOR MATERIALS SUCH AS IN, SB, GE, HG, CD, AND TE WITH DIAMONDLIKECARBON. WE WILL THEN TEST THESE COATINGS FOR OPTICAL PERFORMANCE, CORROSION RESISTENCE, REPRODUCIBILITY, AND ADAPTABILITY TO PRODUCTION.
