Abstract
THE PERFORMANCE OF CORROSION RESISTANT MATERIALS IN CHEMICALINDUSTRIES IS ADVERSELY AFFECTED BY VARIOUS FORMS OF CORROSIONS. MINOR VARIATIONS IN THE ENVIRONMENT MAY HAVE MARKED EFFECT ON THEIR SERVICE LIFE. IN PARTICULAR, STAINLESS STEELS ARE THE MOST USED ALLOYS IN THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY. ALTHOUGH THEY EXHIBIT FAIRLY GOOD CORROSION RESISTANCE FOR A VARIETY OF APPLICATIONS, MOST OF THEM OPERATE AT THEIR LIMITS IN THIS RESPECT. SOME OF THE MORE EXPENSIVE STAINLESS STEELS CONTAINING STRATEGIC ELEMENTS SUCH AS 316, 317 ETC. CAN BE SUBSTITUTED BY THEIR MORE ECONOMIC COUNTERPART 304 STAINLESS STEEL BY SUCCESSFUL MODIFICATION OF ITS SURFACE IN TERMS OF IMPROVING THE CORROSION/STRESS CORROSION RESISTANCE. A PROPOSAL IS MADE HEREIN FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A STRONGLY CORROSION RESISTANTAMORPHOUS LAYER ON THE SURFACE OF 304 STAINLESS STEEL BY THEUSE OF HIGH ENERGY MEV ION BEAM PROCESSING. IN PHASE I, THEBEST COMBINATION OF ION PARAMETERS SUCH AS MASS, ENERGY, DOSE AND SPECIFIC ELEMENTAL ADDITION FOR OBTAINING AN AMORPHOUS LAYER WILL BE DETERMINED. THE AQUEOUS CORROSION BEHAVIOR OF THE COATED STAINLESS STEEL WILL BE INVESTIGATED BY STANDARD ELECTROCHEMICAL TESTS. THE MICROSTRUCTURAL CHARACTERIZATION AND THE CORROSION KINETICS WILL BE STUDIED BY MORE ADVANCED SURFACE AND ELECTROCHEMICAL TECHNIQUES.
