Abstract
THE PROPOSED PHASE I PROGRAM WILL EVALUATE THE CAPABILITIES OF AN INFRARED THERMAL IMAGING SYSTEM TO ACQUIRE THERMAL ENERGY PROFILES FROM OBSERVATIONS OF BARE-WALL COMBUSTORS. SUCH A TECHNIQUE FOR THE ACQUISITION AND STORAGE OF THERMAL HEATING DATA WOULD ASSIST IN THE ANALYSIS OF COMBUSTION AND HEATING PROCESSES; IN STUDYING HEAT TRANSFER COEFFFICIENTS OF MATERIALS; AND INTERNAL REACTION PROCESSES. THE DIGITIZED THERMAL DATA COULD THEN BE PROCESSED AND ANALYZED TO OBTAIN FULL VIEW HEATING CHARACTERISTICS OF COMBUSTORS. THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION OF THIS TECHNOLOGY WOULD REDUCE THE COSTS OF MODIFYING TEST APPARATUS FOR THERMOCOUPLE INSTALLATIONS AND REDUCE THE TIME NECESSARY TO OBTAIN THERMAL PROFILES OF COMBUSTOR CONFIGURATIONS USING PRESENT DAY TECHNIQUES.
