Abstract
THE PROBLEM ADDRESSED IS THAT FUTURE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT CONTROL ROOM OPERATOR WORKLOAD WILL CONSIST PRIMARILY OF PASSIVE MONITORING FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME. THIS WILL RESULT IN DIFFICULTY MAINTAINING OPERATOR ALERTNESS AND PERFORMANCE CAPABILITY. THE TWO OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT ARE TO PROVIDE THE CAPABILITY TO PREDICT AND EVALUATE THE EFFECT OF WORK UNDERLOADON HUMAN PERFORMANCE IN NPP CONTROL ROOMS, AND TO PROVIDE CAPABILITIES TO EVALUATE PROPOSED SYSTEM DESIGNS AND COUNTERMEASURES INTENDED TO MITIGATE THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF THE PREDICTED WORK UNDERLOAD. THE PHASE I EFFORT WILL DEVELOP CONCEPTUAL METHODOLOGIES FOR ACHIEVING THESE OBJECTIVES BY INTEGRATION OF RESEARCH FINDINGS, OPINIONS AND INFORMATION FROM SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS, AND ASSESSMENT OF METHODOLOGIES CURRENTLY IN USE.
