Research Institution
In Phase I, we have shown that Nb alloys are attractive for higher temperature TPS applications in comparison to Ni-based superalloys, based on strength at temperature and density. Phase I work has demonstrated the ability to process these alloys in sheet form and has shown that the alloy can be coated with YAG that is stable in contact with the alloy and thus provide a good barrier against oxidation. Phase II will focus on compositional optimization, scale up of coating process, and evaluation of performance in an integrated TPS application.
