Abstract
AN INNOVATIVE APPLICATION OF CHEMICAL VAPOR DEPOSITION TO PREVENT ARC DAMAGE TO RAIL GUN COMPONENTS IS PROPOSED. SUCH A TUNGSTEN COATED COPPER RAIL GUN CONDUCTOR HAS BEEN SHOWN TO SUFFER NO SURFACE DEGRADATION IN ARC TESTS PERFORMED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS CENTER FOR ELECTROMECHANICS (CEM) IN 1984. THE EFFECTS OF VARYING SURFACE MORPHOLOGY, ADDITION OF RHENIUM, COATING THICKNESS ETS. ON ARC RESISTANCE OF RAILS AND SWITCHES IS PROPOSED FOR EXPERIMENTAL STUDY. ULTRAMET WILL DEVELOP THE COATING TECHNOLOGY WITH CEM, AS SUBCONTRACTOR, PERFORMING THE ARC TESTING AND EVALUATION.
