Abstract
THE PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF A COMPREHENSIVE SOFTWARE SYSTEM CALLED THE STRUCTURAL MECHANICS ARTIFICIALLY INTELLIGENT ENVIRONMENT (SMARTIE) WILL BE DEVELOPED. THIS SYSTEM, UPON IMPLEMENTATION, WILL PROVIDE A TOOL FOR THE FULLY AUTOMATED DESIGN OF A BROAD CLASS OF MECHANICAL PRODUCTS. THE DESIGN WILL EMBODY A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH THAT BLENDS STATE-OF-THE-ART CONCEPTS IN COMPUTER SCIENCE, INTERACTIVE GRAPHICS, FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS, DESIGN SYNTHESIS AND NUMERICAL METHODS. UNLIKE OTHER AVAILABLE SYSTEMS, IT WILL BE DIRECTED TO THE DESIGN ENGINEER WHO IS NOT AN EXPERT IN FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OR OPTIMIZATION. THE SOFTWARE WILL FUNCTION EFFICIENTLY ON A WIDE RANGE OF COMPUTER CONFIGURATIONS, AND IT WILL GREATLY REDUCE THE TIME AND COST OF PRODUCT DESIGN. THE SOFTWARE SYSTEM WILL BE ENGINEERED TO BE EASILY ENHANCED AND MAINTAINED, AND IT WILLPROVIDE A FLEXIBLE FRAMEWORK FOR THE ASSIMILATION OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES AS THEY DEVELOP.
