Abstract

The goal of the proposed project is to develop a non-destructive means of assessing the condition of primary reserve batteries without activating them. Two battery chemistries in particular will be studied, silver oxide/zinc and primary lithium molten salt batteries. AC impedance measurements over a wide range of frequencies will be made on both of these battery chemistries in different conditions (created by accelerated aging of the batteries). The impedance measurements at particular frequencies will be modeled using fuzzy logic modeling to correlate their condition to signatures in the ac impedance measurements. The measurements will be made on batteries of different capacities. Hardware prototype testers will be developed based on this battery condition assessment technique.
