Abstract
A Smart Cartridge gun propulsion concept has been devised to increase the ballistic performance of Navy 5-inch gun systems without modifications to the gun. The smart cartridge concept contains a dense consolidated propellant charge and an electronicallycontrolled smart primer to govern the ignition of various portions of the propellant bed. Phase I interior ballistic simulations have shown that performance improvements well over 20% are possible with this propulsion concept.This effort will experimentally evaluate the technical feasibility of the Phase I concept that was demonstrated using computer simulations. The proposed Basic Phase II Work Plan contains experimental tasks to confirm SCC concept viability at the 40mmscale. This caliber was selected because it is large enough to contain all of the features of a full scale charge and small enough to realize significant cost and time savings per test. These cost savings can be translated into a more comprehensive testplan to thoroughly investigate and understand SCC design issues and lead to efficient Phase III full scale development.In addition to experimental development, the Basic Phase II effort will expand the simulation work begun during Phase I. The NGEN code will be included with the IBHVG2 and XKTC codes to add a two-dimensional simulation capability for increased realism.Analyses will be performed to support the 40mm experimental work and the experimental results will be used to upgrade the predictive capability of the codes. Another simulation effort will be directed toward transition to the Phase III full scaleapplication.
