Abstract

Biometric technologies have advanced rapidly over the past few years and are increasing steadily in popularity and deployment. In particular, fingerprint biometrics are being integrated to protect our nations critical infrastructure. Public and private industries, along with government agencies, are rapidly implementing biometric identification as part of their overall security policy. The International Biometrics Group projects that fingerprint revenues will grow from $198 million in 2003 to $1.493 billion in 2008, compromising 32% of the entire biometrics market. The objective of this Phase II effort is to develop fingerprint biometric liveness detection software that provides detection against potential attacks targeting our nation’s biometric infrastructure. This software will be directly integrated into the current install-base via driver updates by the manufacturers and bundled with the newest deployments.. Specifically, during Phase II we will expand the scope, depth and breadth of the validation checks currently being employed by the Phase I Biometric Liveness Authentication Development Environment, (BLADE) Proof of Concept. We will also integrate the resulting technology into multiple Identix biometric fingerprint technologies to demonstrate the ease with which the install base can be updated and new devices can be introduced..
