Abstract
Aircraft wire damage can be caused by aging, maintenance, vibration, exposure to moisture, and many other factors. However, current wire maintenance and inspection methods are often insufficient to detect these frequent problems. Williams-Pyro, Inc. proposes to develop an aircraft wire maintenance system that detects wiring problems and analyzes the type of fault. This system, called Active Automated Diagnostic System for Aircrafts (AADSA), is composed of a Smart Insert to be connected to the wiring system and an Interrogator Unit for retrieving and processing information collected by the insert. Phase I development of AADSA includes the following 4 objectives: (1) Explore the feasibility of using a reflectometry technique to detect material flaws in wires; (2) Develop a method for categorizing the type of fault within the wires; (3) Design a Interrogator Unit for retrieving information; (4) Develop suitable methods for validation and verification of the information
