Abstract
SOLID RESIDUE FROM COAL-FIRED FLUIDIZED-BED COMBUSTORS CREATES TWO PROBLEMS: IT IS HARD TO DISPOSE OF, AND THERE IS TOO MUCH OF IT. THE PROPOSED PROGRAM INTRODUCES A METHOD FOR CONDITIONING FBC RESIDUE THAT SOLVES THE FIRST PROBLEM, AND REDUCES THE SECOND. THE OPERATING DIFFICULTIES IN DISPOSAL ARE CAUSED BY THE UNREACTED LIME WHICH, WHEN WETTED FOR DUST CONTROL, EMITS DUSTY STEAM AND FORMS CLINKERS. THE DUSTY STEAM CREATES AN AIR POLLUTION PROBLEM, WHILE THE CLINKERS HAMPER TRUCK UNLOADING AND CAN ENDANGER IT. UNREACTED LIME ALSO CREATES A FIRE HAZARD AT SANITARY LANDFILLS. SHIPPING UNCONDITIONEDRESIDUE SHIFTS THESE PROBLEMS FROM THE PLANT TO THE LANDFILL, REQUIRING THE USE OF DEDICATED LANDFILLS THAT ALSO ARE REMOTELY LOCATED WHERE AIR POLLUTION LAWS ARE LESS STRINGENT. THIS ADDS TO THEIR COST AND REDUCES THEIR AVAILABILITY, PARTICULARLY FOR SMALL INDUSTRIAL PLANTS. PRESENT METHODS TO CONDITION FBC RESIDUE USE CONVENTIONAL ASH CONDITIONER MIXERS BY ADDING JUST ENOUGH WATER TO MOISTEN THE RESIDUE. THE IMPRACTICALITY OF ADEQUATELY CONTROLLING THE WATERFLOW WHILE PROCESSING FBC WASTE IS AT THE HEART OF THE PROBLEM. THE PROPOSED METHOD QUENCHES THE RESIDUE IN A TANK OF WATER. SETTLED RESIDUE IS REMOVED FROM THE TANK'S BOTTOM, THE EXCESS WATER IS DRAINED OFF, AND THE MATERIAL IS LOADED INTO A TRUCK FOR DISPOSAL. IN THE ADVANCED VERSION, THE HYDRATED RESIDUE IS ALSO RECYCLED TO THE FBC TO REDUCE LIMESTONE CONSUMPTION, AND THE CONDITIONED RESIDUE IS PROCESSED TO RECOVER LIME. THE PROPOSED PROCESS HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED TO ELIMINATE BOILING, CLINKER FORMATION, AND THE NEED TO CONTROL THE WATER-SOLIDS RATIO. WITH THESE IMPROVEMENTS, THE NEED FOR DEDICATED LANDFILLS, AND TRUCK UNLOADING, SHOULD ALL BE ELIMINATED.
