Abstract
SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS IN PERFORMANCE AND REDUCTIONS IN MANUFACTURING COSTS FOR THE TOTAL SOLAR PYRANOMETER ARE EXPECTED FROM THIS PROJECT. THE RESEARCH IS NEEDED TO PROVIDE THE ENERGY SYSTEMS ENGINEER WITH MORE PRECISE INFORMATION ON INCOMING SOLAR RADIATION SO THAT NEW SOLAR-DRIVEN ENERGY SCHEMES CAN BE COMPARATIVELY EVALUATED. PHASE I REEXAMINES THE ORIGINAL CALLENDAR PYRANOMETER AND INTRODUCES UP-TO-DATE MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGIES TO REDUCE UNCERTAINTIES IN THE MEASUREMENT. SPECIFIC METHODS FOR REDUCING COSINE ERRORS AND FOUR APPROACHES TO REDUCING TEMPERATURE DEPENDENCIES ARE BEING CONSIDERED. A PROGRAM FOR OBTAINING INDEPENDENT EVALUATION OF THE RESULTING DESIGN IS BEING USED. EXPERIENCES GAINED FROM THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MODERN ULTRAVIOLET-B (UV-B) PYRANOMETER ARE BEING HEAVILY DRAWN UPON.
