Abstract
THE MEASUREMENT OF BROADBAND LONGWAVE ATMOSPHERIC (IR) RADIATION IS A KEY ELEMENT OF THE STUDY OF THE GLOBAL CLIMATE AND GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE MECHANISMS. THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT NEED FOR REDUCING THE MEASUREMENT UNCERTAINTIES OF GROUND AND AIRBORNE-BASED INSTRUMENTATION FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF LONGWAVE RADIATION. CURRENTLY AVAILABLE INSTRUMENTS OFFER UNSATISFACTORY LEVELS OF ACCURACY AND INSTRUMENT-TO-INSTRUMENT CONSISTENCY. RESEARCHERS ARE IDENTIFYING SEVERAL AREAS IN WHICH PYRGEOMETER DESIGN COULD BE IMPROVED AND OUTLINING EXPERIMENTS TO VERIFY THE ENHANCED PERFORMANCE. THE GOAL OF THE PROJECT IS AN INSTRUMENT THAT SIGNIFICANTLY EXCEEDS THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENT OF THE BSRN NETWORK OF 5 PERCENT (OR 10 W/M(2)) MEASUREMENT ERROR AND IS CLOSE TO THE WMO-DEFINED PERFORMANCE LEVEL FOR A SECONDARY STANDARD TOTAL SOLAR PYRANOMETER (1 PERCENT MEASUREMENT ERROE).
