Abstract

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has identified the need to protect buildings from chemical/biological assaults. Science, Math & Engineering, Inc., proposes to develop innovative, self-regenerating filters that combine filter media and ultraviolet radiation to neutralize and remove both chemical and biological agents in building ventilation systems. The goals of this Phase I research project are to: (1) compare performance of filter designs, (2) explore cost reduction for prototype assembly, and (3) demonstrate degradation of chemical and biological simulants. The commercial sector will benefit from low pressure drop self-regenerating filters in business ventilation systems, medical and microbiological facilities, food processing, waste remediation, private residences, commercial aircraft, and contaminated mailrooms. The military will benefit from chemical/biological protective face masks and clothing capable of self-decontamination.
