Abstract
A PHASE I PROPOSAL TO DEVELOP A FUNCTIONAL SPECIFICATION ANDOPERATIONAL PROTOTYPE OF A TECHNOLOGICALLY SOPHISTICATED WRITING TOOL FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED STUDENTS. PROVISIONALLY ENTITLED "COAUTHOR", THE PROGRAM WILL BE IMPLEMENTED AS AN ENHANCED-FUNCTION WORD PROCESSOR SUPPORTED BY AN ASSEMBLAGE OF RELATED INTEGRAL UTILITIES THAT INCLUDE: A FUNCTION FOR CONVERTING TEXT AND SYSTEM MESSAGES TO SYNTHETIC SPEECH AND LARGE-TYPE FORMATS; A SPELLING CHECKER; AN ONLINE THESAURUS;AN INFORMATION STORAGE AND FILING FUNCTION; A SOFTWARE CAL CULATOR; A TELECOMMUNICATIONS MODULE; AND A VARIETY OF EDITORIAL ASSISTANCE FUNCTIONS THAT EMPLOY THE TECHNIQUES OFARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. THE TOOL IS EXPECTED TO FIND ADDITIONAL USE AS AN UNUSUALLY POWERFUL WORD PROCESSOR FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED OFFICE WORKERS AND PROFESSIONALS IN A RANGE OF OCCUPATIONS.
