Abstract

Carnauba wax is a natural product that is used in a variety of applications ranging from food additives to surface protection to explosive matrix. The material comes in several grades and is supplied by a number of companies. Its high melting point and hardness make it useful in many melt-castable explosive compositions. Examples include Composition B, which is an RDX/TNT blend, and the many experimental compositions designed to address the shortcomings of TNT-based melt-castable compositions. While its performance is undoubtedly exceptional, the lack of domestic sources makes it logistically undesirable. In this Phase I SBIR program, Infoscitex Corporation proposes to identify and develop natural and synthetic alternatives to carnauba wax through use of computational methods and experimental evaluation. At least one natural and one synthetic alternative will be recommended for further investigation to the USAF.
