AbstractWe propose to develop a high energy density battery for military applications. These batteries will have an energy density of 1,130 Wh/l and a specific energy of 366 Wh/kg, which are much higher than those of rechargeable lithium batteries currently available in the market. They have extremely high cycle life (> 10,000 charge/discharge cycles), a wide operating temperature range, and a rapid recharge capability. In Phase I of this project, Excellatron has successfully verified feasibility of a novel technology for low cost manufacturing of thin film lithium batteries. The samples prepared by this technology have been cycled for more than 1,000 cycles with minimal capacity loss. The objective of Phase II is to design and build a high energy density rechargeable battery based on the hybrid method developed in the Phase I project. Production procedures will be optimized and the scale up process will be developed. The battery’s performance will be tailored based on the requirements of the Air Force and other military applications. One Ah cells with higher capacity will be prepared and tested under the conditions required for military applications. The batteries developed in this project will be the ideal power sources for the Air Force’s high energy density applications.
