Abstract
The U.S. military’s next-generation radio system, JTRS, is based on Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology and will create new opportunities, methods, and applications for generating and sharing tactical data. One of the many challenges in realizing the JTRS vision is to create small, lightweight, embeddable devices that operate from battery power, meet the requirements for performance, SCA compliance, and can be carried, worn, or embedded for mobile applications. Our HW design (Salvador-1) incorporates available best-of-breed low-power technologies from both commercial and Government sectors to produce an embeddable low-cost, small size and weight, low power consumption SDR device composed of commercially available components. Our small-form factor Power management Middleware (DSPM) software provides a middleware abstraction layer where software components can either self-manage energy use, or, be managed by a high-order power management service. Thus, the overall power management function is a collaborative effort between multiple software and hardware components working together to gain power savings.
