Abstract
During the Phase I program, UES successfully demonstrated the technical feasibility of a novel concept ("Top-Down Process") to produce TaC-based composites with high mechanical strength and exceptional toughness (~12 MPa m1/2). We believe such accomplishments will allow for the near term realization of a new generation ceramic rocket nozzle that is compatible with the IHPRPT Phase III-type propellant. The innovative composite process developed by UES results in a very unique microstructure that cannot be obtained from the current fabrication technologies. In the Phase II program, UES will further refine the technology to achieve the best mechanical performances. The fundamental science behind the new findings will also be thoroughly studied, in collaboration with the University of Dayton Research Institute. Various collaborative works on nozzle testing and scale-up, as well as near net- shaped fabrication processes, will be conducted with industrial partners.
