AbstractThis project designs, develops, and evaluates a fully functional prototype of a power wheelchair with a variable position mid wheel drive system. The variable position drive wheel system can be moved forward or backward from the mid wheel position using an automated simple mechanical linear motion system and electronic control system, which the power wheelchair user can easily manage, to change the position of the drive wheels. This feature is unavailable in current powered wheelchair designs. Evaluation includes extended end-user testing as well as testing against the ANSI/RESNA standards.
