AbstractThe Phase II SBIR program will address a need for durable, infra-red transmitting sensor windows of large area, eventually as large as 32"x 32"x 0.5". Two areas of study are planned. The first is to improve optical quality, particularly homogeneity of refractive index and absence of stress birefringence, voids, bubbles and inclusions. The second is to improve mechanical strength for greater durability. Technology Assessment & Transfer (TA & T) works primarily with magnesium aluminate spinel and has developed the capability to produce large plates of transparent spinel by hot pressing. Spinel offers superior transmission characteristics for IR sensors and has a cost advantage compared to competing transparent ceramic materials such as sapphire and AlON.
