Abstract
Next generation free electron lasers (FEL) will enable the exploration of physics at high powers and long and short wavelengths. The electron "gun" is a laser-driven photocathode, and the primary unproven part of this technology is the development of a laser with the required pulse characteristics, average power and pulse duration.
