Abstract
C-CAT continues to successfully make complex large scale assemblies for hypersonic aerospace vehicles based on decades of Carbon-Carbon (C-C) fabrication experience. Current and future vehicle designs continually push the limits of C-C material capabilities requiring a sustained effort to characterize and improve the performance and reliability, along with producing predictive evaluation methods. Large scale assemblies drive the current state of the art due to the unique set of challenges they present, in particular exceedingly thick aerodynamic and thermal load carrying 2D laminates. The development described in this proposal will primarily work to provide stronger, more reliable material system through experimentation in order to provide materials for future products. Additional efforts will focus on correlating final and in process material strengths with computed tomography (CT) evaluations and thermo-mechanical stress models.
