Abstract

MATECH"s ultra-high-temperature, dimensionally stable structural insulator material, a C(fiber)/ZrOC(matrix) ceramic composite material system, is a high performance structural insulator technology. The phase I effort identified life-cycle storage and non-operational aging events. Deleterious response to stress/deformation and thermal shock were not observed. Properties of exposed specimens were in family when compared to control groups. Microscopic analysis revealed only subtle differences in microstructure after failure. The material system addresses all areas pertinent to Life-Cycle Sustainability: Aging/Weathering, Operational/Maritime Extremes, Supply Chain and Cost. MATECH will address these areas to burn-down risk to sustainability of C/ZrOC manufacturing. Approved for Public Release 14-MDA-7903 (2 July 14)
