65437 In closed waste-storage systems containing either easily oxidizable metals or radioactive materials, molecular hydrogen is produced. If these closed containers have hydrogen impermeable shells or cases, the build-up of hydrogen gas may form an explosive or flammable mixture with any contained air. It may also present a corrosion problem for certain reactive metal elements that tend to form hydrides. This project will utilize unsaturated hydrocarbons in a permeable matrix with an appropriate catalyst to provide a potentially low-cost, effective means to absorb gaseous hydrogen, thereby alleviating the potential for fire or explosion. In Phase I, hydrogen getters containing highly unsaturated hydrocarbons and small quantities of homogeneous catalysts will be characterized for hydrogen uptake rates and hydrogen capacities and compared to literature values for related systems. The thermal and spectral properties of these formulations will be characterized. These data will be used to establish useful hydrogen getter formulations. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: A getter of this type should have a major impact on shipping safety both for the TRUPACT-II container and for packaging many potential hydrogen-generating reagents used in the chemical industry.
