Abstract
THIS PROJECT PROPOSES AN ADVANCED COMPOSITE, MODULAR ENCLOSURE FOR FUTURE NAVY INTERCOOLED RECUPERATED (ICR) GAS TURBINE ENGINES. THE ENCLOSURE ENVISIONED BY ADVANCED COMPOSITE TECHNOLOGY, INC (ACT) WILL BE COMPOSED OF AN OUTER STRUCTURAL COMPOSITE SHELL (SCS) WITH AN INTERNAL FLEXIBLE PROTECTIVE SHROUD (PS). THE MODULAR CONCEPT WILL ALLOW EASY REMOVAL AND ACCESS TO THE ENGINE FOR INSPECTION, MAINTENANCE, AND REPLACEMENT WITHOUT THE USE OF CRANES OR HEAVY MACHINERY. THE STRUCTURAL COMPOSITE SHELL WILL SEAL THE ENGINE COMPONENTS FROM FLOODING AS WELL AS PROVIDE AN ACOUSTIC AND THERMAL BREAK. THE PROTECTIVE SHROUD WILL BE DESIGNED TO PREVENT NBC CONTAMINATION OF THE ENGINE ROOM AS WELL AS CONTAIN AN ENGINE BLAST OVERPRESSURE, FIRE, FUEL SPRAY, AND TURBINE BLADE OR METAL SPLATTER IF THE ENGINE OVERSPEEDS TO DISTRUCTION.
