Abstract
THE RECENT DISCOVERY OF PEROVSKITE-LIKE COPPER-OXIDE SUPERCONDUCTORS WITH TRANSITION TEMPERATURES ABOVE LIQUID NITROGEN TEMPERATURES HAS LED TO RENEWED INTEREST IN THE APPLICATION OF SUPERCONDUCTIVITY. THESE NEW YBACUO (YBA(2)CU(3)O(7-X) MATERIALS OFFER THE OPPORTUNITY TO USE THESE MATERIALS AS DETECTORS MORE CONVENIENTLY THAN THE "CLASSICAL" SUPERCONDUCTORS. THE LONG RANGE GOAL OF THE PROPOSED PROGRAM IS TO DEVELOP BOLOMETERS USING THE NEW HIGH T(C) SUPERCONDUCTING MATERIALS FOR USE AS IR DETECTORS. THE PHASE I OBJECTIVE IS TO DEMONSTRATE THE SENSITIVITY OF SUCH BOLOMETERS TO INFRARED RADIATION, TEST THE WAVELENGTH AND TEMPERATURE RANGE OF SENSITIVITY, INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTS OF GRAIN SIZE ON THE QUALITY OF SUCH DETECTORS, AND TO PROVIDE UNDERSTANDING ON WHICH TO GUIDE THEIR DEVELOPMENT.
