AbstractThe AF requires a portable instrument to measure thermal reflectance signatures from target surfaces. In the field, measurements include 1) total integrated scatter; 2) retro-reflected scatter; 3) angular scatter from normal incidense to 75 degrees off-normal; and 4) parallel and perpendicular polarization components of reflectance. Advanced Fuel Research, Inc., (AFR) previously delivered a benchtop labortary instrument to AEDC which is routinely used to measure thermal radiative-property data for inserted target coupons as a function of both spectral wavelength and termperature. An FT-IR spectrometer and proven mirror technology are used in this commercial instrument developed through the SBIR program. AFR is in an excellent position to demonstrate and develop a fiber-optical based geometry to afford a portable field-usable instrument which capitalizes on much of the measurement methodology presently used by AEDC in determining radiative-property data in the labortory. The new instrument will solve the present need of the Air Force for routine field measurements of target reflectance and result in an expanded product line of instruments capable of measuring radiative properties.
