Abstract
THE NEW GENERATION OF SYNCHROTRON RADIATION (SR) SOURCES PROMISES TO EXTEND SIGNIFICANTLY THE REGIMES OF PHOTON ENERGY AND INTENSITY AVAILABLE TO MATERIALS SCIENTISTS AND OTHER RESEARCHERS. A KEY CHALLENGE TO DEVELOPING THESE NEW SR SOURCES IS THE CONSTRUCTION OF PREMONOCHROMATOR X-RAY BEAMLINE OPTICS THAT SURVIVE AND FUNCTION UNDER THE INTENSE HEAT LOADING PRODUCED BY THESE MACHINES. AN EFFICIENTLY COOLED, MECHANICALLY STABILIZED SUBSTRATE ASSEMBLY IS PLANNED, WHICH WILL COMPLEMENT THE USE OF LAYERED SYNTHETIC MICROSTRUCTURE X-RAY INTERFERENCE MIRROR AS A PREMONOCHROMATOR ELEMENT. THE OUTCOME OF PHASE I WILL BE THE DESIGN OF A FEASIBLE SUBSTRATE ASSEMBLY THAT EMPLOYS HEAT-PIPE TECHNOLOGY TO EFFECT EFFICIENT HEAT EXTRACTION FROM THE OPTICALLY ACTIVE SURFACE OF THE PREMONOCHROMATOR.
