Abstract
HALON 1301 (CF3BR) IS CURRENTLY IN WIDE SPREAD USE ON NAVAL VESSELSAS AN EFFECTIVE AND NON-TOXIC ACTIVE AGENT IN FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS. UNFORTUNATELY, FUTURE MANUFACTURE AND USE OF CF3BR MAY BE SEVERELY RESTRICTED DUE TO ITS ROLE AS A POTENT AGENT IN STRATOSPHERIC OZONE DEPLETION CHEMISTRY. ALTERNATIVE FIRE SUPPRESSION CHEMICALS NEED TOBE IDENTIFIED AND ASSESSED TO REPLACE HALON 1301 IN NAVAL SYSTEMS. THIS PROPOSAL ADDRESSES TILE DETERMINATION OF ATMOSPHERIC CHEMICAL LIFETIMES AND STRATOSPHERIC OZONE DEPLETION POTENTIALS FOR REPLACEMENT FIRC SUPPRESSION CHEMICALS, WHICH WILL BE A MAJOR RACTOR IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL ACCEPTABILITY OF ANY PROPOSED SUBSTITUTES FOR HALON 1301.
