Abstract
MOST POWER PLANTS CURRENTLY BEING USED FOR AERONAUTICAL PROPULSIVE PURPOSES FUNCTION BY BURNING LIQUID FUELS IN THEIR COMBUSTION CHAMBERS. THEREFORE, THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF EFFICIENT PROPULSION SYSTEMS REQUIRE THE COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF SPRAY COMBUSTION PROCESSES. TOWARDS THIS END, SEVERAL THEORETICAL MODELS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED OVER THE YEARS, BUT THEIR CAPABILITIES ARE STILL OPEN TO QUESTION. THE PREDICTIONS OF THESE MODELS WILL HAVE TO BE EXPERIMENTALLY VALIDATED BEFORE THEY CAN BE USED WITH SUFFICIENT CONFIDENCE. DATA THAT ARE REQUIRED FOR VALIDATION INCLUDE, APART FROM VARIOUS GAS PHASE FLOW PROPERTIES, THE SIZE, VELOCITY, AND TEMPERATURE OF MOVING DROPLETS. CURRENTLY, THE SIMULTANEOUS MEASUREMENT OF DROPLET SIZE AND VELOCITY IS POSSIBLE WITH A PDPA. HOWEVER, NO INSTRUMENT IS AVAILABLE FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF DROPLET TEMPERATURES. THIS PROPOSAL, THEREFORE, DESCRIBES THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN INNOVATIVE INSTRUMENT FOR THE NON-INSTRUSIVE AND SIMULTANEOUS MEASUREMENT OF TEMPERATURE, SIZE, AND VELOCITY OF INDIVIDUAL DROPLETS IN REACTIVE SPRAY ENVIRONMENTS.
