AbstractLeveraging on our extensive R&D and production experience in MEMS based components and sensors, AGILTRON proposes to realize a portable and low-cost equipment based on an innovative highly sensitive magnetometer, for detecting the presence of corrosion without disassembling the aircraft or removing the skin of the aircraft. This equipment can be applied to detect different kind of corrosion of/between different materials, and can detect corrosion in a multi-layer structure. Our device is able to locate corrosion of approximately 0.050 diameter in size accomplished in up to and including 5 layers of material or approximately 0.50 deep. In the Phase I program, a magnetometer prototype will be demonstrated proof-of-concept tests will be performed, to demonstrate the feasibility of the technology, and to establish the performance characteristics of the corrosion detection equipment to be developed in Phase II. BENEFIT: The requirement for detecting the presence of corrosion without removing the skin of the aircraft is applicable to current Air-force, NASA and commercial airline companies. Consequently, both military and commercial airline companies would significantly benefit from this low cost and high sensitive corrosion detection device. This detection device will also find wide use in corrosion inspection of ships of navy and commercial boat shipping industries. One more application is in corrosion detection for bridge and steel-building health monitoring.
