Abstract
An innovative towed active sonar concept is proposed which significantly reduces peak and average input power. The system also reduces radiated acoustic source level by approximately 10 dB over previous systems designed for similar applications. The reductions are attained by distribution of source energy in time and space. Transmitter waveform and search schemes are proposed as well as a source-receiver interference reduction strategy. A detection performance metric is proposed for use in comparing alternative system concepts or parameters. Application of the metric indicates a potential detection gain of 12 dB using the proposed technique.
