Abstract
A free space optical data link is proposed based upon the use of symmetric self electro-optic effect device, the S-SEED. This device, a multiple quantum well based p-i-n diode pair, is a photonic switch which can be utilized as an electrically modulated reflector or inversely as an optically modulated electronic element. It can therefore act both as a transmitter or receiver. The extremely low energy required to switch the logic state of a SEED makes it extremely fast, and ideally suited for use on a cryogenically cooled infrared focal plane. Under this proposed Phase I project Amain will develop a preliminary design for a data link providing a low data rate input to the focal plane for clocks and control logic, and a high data rate output link handling up to a Gbps to receive digital video data. The interface formats will be designed to be compatible with Amain's proprietary on-focal-plane high-speed A-D converter.
