AbstractAdvanced aircraft are required to perform large amplitude maneuvers and high precision tracking in the presence of disturbances, uncertainties, nonlinearities, and component faults. The recently emerging nonlinear H control approach is proposed here to meet the ever stringent mission requirements on advanced aircraft. Our approach features the following innovations: 1) by incorporating the nonlinear dynamics into the design process, a nonlinear H flight control system design approach in the continuous time domain is presented; 2) for performing the computer control of aircraft, a nonlinear H controller design algorithm for continuous-time systems with sampled measurements is developed; 3) a nonlinear H controller design algorithm for general nonlinear systems is proposed. These innovations aim at achieving a flight control system design with a high level of accuracy, extended flight envelop, robustness, and reliability in presence of disturbances and uncertainties. system design approach in the continuous time domain is present;
